MIH is a developmental abnormality of the teeth that affects one in seven in children. It affects one or more of the first permanent molars, which are the first to grow at approximately six years of age. It can affect, but to a lesser extent, the central incisors (the blades). There could also be hypomineralization in baby teeth, affecting the second primary molars and canines.

It is a malocclusion or “poor bite,” implies that the teeth do not close "like a box", that is, the teeth above the jaw. This malposition can occur on the upper and lower mouth or both, it must be solved as the patient grows, if the patient waits till they are older, the solution can’t be solved with orthodontics but with surgery.

It is a malocclusion without dental contact in the anterior part of the teeth. An early diagnosis of this type of malocclusion is very important since it can be linked to habits such as: thumb sucking, mouth breathing, swallowing food with the tongue in between.
