Dental restorations can include crowns, veneers, inlays, and also bridges. Here is a simple explanation of the differences between these four treatments:
Dental Crowns
Firstly, a crown is also known as a dental cap. These restorations completely encircle a tooth or dental implant, restoring the visible area of the tooth. This is 360 degrees restoration. In other words, an entire new tooth is placed on top of the existing natural dental structure, called the root and core.
When you have severely worn out or damaged teeth, they can be strengthened and restored with dental crowns.
Dental Veneers
Secondly, a dental veneer is a thin shell that is custom-made to fit on the front side of a tooth. Veneers can be used to improve contour and color of a patients smile. Another benefit of a veneer is the ability to restore only the front side of a tooth, therefore, saving a large portion of the natural tooth structure.
In addition, a veneer can correct slight misalignments between teeth and improve the overall smile. Most people complete treatments using between four and ten veneers.
Dental Inlays
Next, a dental inlay is a premade filling that is used to restore an extensively decayed or damaged tooth. They are also often used to replace old amalgam fillings. An inlay is made of ceramic/porcelain and adds strength to the remaining tooth structure, preventing further damage. An inlay is a single piece that is made to fit the specific shape of a cavity. Inlays cover the hole and fissures of a tooth’s chewing surface. This means it restores the strength, look, and lifetime of the tooth.
A much better option for restoring a missing tooth is a dental implant. The advantage of an implant is that it keeps each tooth independent without the reduction of the adjacent teeth which act as anchors for a bridge.
