Oral Surgery
Happily, oral surgery is not what it used to be! Technology and techniques have changed greatly over the years, making the entire experience more comfortable for the patient. Subsequently, treatment time and trauma to the patient is greatly reduced.
Why Might I need Oral Surgery?
There are many reasons oral dental surgery may be required. For example;
- A severely infected tooth that can’t be saved
- Broken teeth that are so damaged a restoration is not possible
- A missing tooth for implant placement
- Bone graft for patients suffering from bone loss
- Gum grafts for patients with periodontal disease and gum recession
Most importantly, treatment is evaluated and planned using 3D x-ray imaging. This gives us high quality images of the entire mouth and an assured diagnosis. Out 3D imaging is advanced and comes with integrated software to measure bone density, height, and depth. In the case of infection, we can also tell you the exact size and seriousness of the abscess.
As a result, any oral surgery you might need is planned accordingly, and explained in detail to you.
Common Oral Surgeries
The most common dental surgery is a tooth extraction. This might be recommended if you have severe tooth decay, gum disease (periodontitis), dental trauma, or wisdom teeth complications. Normally there are some options to save a tooth presenting pain, which is always our goal. However, in some circumstances it may not be possible to save a tooth, and an extraction is the only option.
Secondly, an awkwardly positioned or infected wisdom teeth can cause discomfort and pain at any time. It may be so badly positioned that it begins to push the other teeth out of position. Many wisdom teeth grow inclined and in strange positions, making them difficult teeth to remove. This is another reason why 3D imaging is so important.
Oral Surgery Under Sedation
Regardless of the surgery required, treatment is performed under sedation. This is great, because in addition to the use of local anesthesia to numb the affected area we use sedation. A light, conscious sedation takes away anxiety and helps you relax, making you feel sleepy. Depending on the dose, some patients even sleep through the procedure.
