Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment, or “killing the nerve,” is a specialty of dentistry in which the entire vascular-nervous package of the pulp chamber is removed. This may be required if a tooth has an infection and the abscess needs to be removed.
On the other hand, if a tooth is severely decayed or damaged to the point where the conducts of the tooth are exposed, a root canal treatment would also be necessary. Therefore, the tooth can be saved instead of lost.
How Does a Root Canal Treatment Work?
-
- Firstly, we can offer you sedation so you are totally relaxed and calm before we begin.
- Local anestesia is also used to numb the entire area so you don’t feel any discomfort during treatment.
- The root canals are decontaminated, shaped and filled three-dimensionally. Consequently, the tooth loses its vitality and we eliminate infection in the bone that is surrounded by the roots.
- Finally, and usually on a second appointment, a new restoration or crown is made to complete the treatment, seal the conducts and restore the tooth.
Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
Most importantly, this treatment is used to save a tooth that could othwersise have been lost. Root canal treatment removes the nerve of the tooth, allowing infections to be cleaned out. Once the nerve is removed, this tooth will no longer be subject to sensitivity or pain.
